Wal Mart: The High Cost of Low Price
WAL-MART: THE HIGH COST OF LOW PRICE is a feature length documentary that uncovers a retail giant's assault on families and American values.
The film dives into the deeply personal stories and everyday lives of families and communities struggling to fight a goliath. A working mother is forced to turn to public assistance to provide healthcare for her two small children. A Missouri family loses its business after Wal-Mart is given over $2 million to open its doors down the road. A mayor struggles to equip his first responders after Wal-Mart pulls out and relocates just outside the city limits. A community in California unites, takes on the giant, and wins!
Producer/Director Robert Greenwald and Brave New Films take you on an extraordinary journey that will change the way you think, feel -- and shop.
Running time: 98 Minutes

The 4th Gadabout Traveling Film Festival
Returning to Shreveport in a fossil-fuel-free bio-diesel ambulance, the Gadabout Traveling Film Festival, is just in time to administer a needed fix of their brand of a Do-It-Yourself film experience… On the road for The 4th Annual Gadabout Traveling Film Festival they will travel for 5 months and visit over 50 cities.
The Gadabout is a nationally touring film festival that screens a program of 15+ international short films. Independent in every sense, these films share the same willingness to challenge the conventions set for filmmaking. The Gadabout is a distribution avenue for truly indie filmmakers that distrust Hollywood and the commercial film festival circuit. They are NOT a competition, but rather a celebration of what is possible in independent film and video.
This is filmmaking as art, entertainment, and fun.
Growing and changing every year, the tour will feature live acoustic music by NY based Halo Fauna (www.halofauna.com), along with a zine and book distro, an art show, a craft sale, and the opportunity for a D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself) crash filmmaking course and discussion. They not only want to show great films, but how to make them. The Gadabout also grows more environmentally friendly with their new diesel ambulance that runs on Vegetable Oil! (www.fossilfreefuel.com) They can't wait to show you how it works.
Tuesday NOVEMBER 8 / minicine? / 846 Texas Avenue / 7:30PM / Free

Nosferatu - Devil Music Ensemble
minicine? host Devil Music Ensemble, Boston, to perform an original soundtrack to the 1922, F. W. Murnau classic, Nosferatu. Performers include: Tim Nylander (drums, percussion), Jonah Rapino (electric violin, vibraphone, synthesizer) and Brendon Wood (guitar, lap steel, synthesizer).
About Nosferatu:
"Nosferatu, like The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari and Metropolis, descended from the same artistic wave of German cinema in the 1920's, is the definition itself of artistic film, where painting, architecture, literature, psychology, and politics meet in a work that gratifies both the eyes and the spirit. Thus the film develops over several dimensions, from its artistic claim of Romantic-Expressionism, the advent of Nazism, to homosexuality, desire, globalization, and a reflection on cinema itself. Murnau draws from a history that links Vampires to unexplained deaths. The term, Nosferatu, is of modern origin and derives from the Slavic "nosufur-atu" which is a derivation of the Greek "nosophoros" or "plague carrier." The understanding that rat-borne illnesses were the cause of many plagues dominated scientific thinking in recent centuries. While in earlier times many unexplained deaths fueled a developing culture of Vampirism and the concept of the "un-dead" in Europe. While drawing on popular Vampire lore Murnau and Albin Grau also relied heavily and without permission on Stoker's novel. They apparently had no intention of paying any royalties for their use of the novel as the basis for their screenplay. They attempted to disguise the characters by changing their names and geographical setting. The film premiered in 1922 but eventually, Florence Stoker with the aid of the British Incorporated Society of Authors succeeded in destroying the original negatives and most of the prints of Nosferatu." Why Film? "For over 100 years, film has been the standard that other mediums have striven to achieve. Unlike it's electronic contemporaries, the finer nuances of the format have remained unchanged. Film speaks a language all its own, and when combined with an artist's vision, images are given a life that only film can provide. In a world dominated by new moving image technologies, when we see film, we know we are taking a special voyage." -TIE

The Dirty Projectors: The Getty Address minicine? host The Dirty Projectors to perform The Getty Address...
The Getty Address is an album-length narrative inspired by Aztec mythology, the Eagles, and the 9/11 aftermath. It is a sprawling, layered glitch opera about Don Henley, leader of the aforementioned country/soft-rock group, and it was recorded over the course of almost two years, in three different states, with more than twenty-five people. Dave Longstreth, the principal Dirty Projector, wrote and recorded arrangements for wind septet, women’s choir, and cello octet, digitally deconstructed them, and then sang over the reconstituted parts in order to make these songs. Many of the album's often-gibberish lyrics stem from Longstreth’s first album, "The Graceful Fallen Mango", and the Eagles’ "Greatest Hits Volume I". The result is a captivating American song cycle that recreates the marriage of African and European music in their pure, unbastardized forms... complete with annimated film by James Sumner...
Also performing will be Vuk, Nat Baldwin, and The Wind-Up Bird.... NOT TO BE MISSED.... Saturday JUNE 4 / Tipitina's Music Co-Op / 700 Texas St. / 8PM / Free
