Wednesday, OCTOBER 30 Residue of Memory Residue of Memory is an experimental documentary exploring the metaphorical relationship between family loss and an abandoned rock quarry. Inspired by a story about Ms. O'Dell's grandfather, who owned rock quarries in Southern Indiana and who, according to family myth, made and lost a fortune at the turn of the century, the work centers on notions of the American Dream, our mediated connections to the land, and how families and people shape their identity through their connections to, or distance from, the landscape. The video also is autobiographical, as it documents Ms. O'Dell's journey to understand the notion of home through both its presence and absence. Five generations of women lead this work as the video moves through the landscape, literally and figuratively, from one town to another. It is an attempt to understand why her family has been so transient, why many of its women lost their fathers and, as a result, why they became so displaced. Ms. O'Dell states; "I am searching to understand a lineage of dislocation and abandonment, which in many ways is a counterpoint to the American Dream." "Supported by a grant from the Louisiana State Arts Council, the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture Recreation and Tourism, and the Shreveport Regional Arts Council." 8PM, 824 Texas Avenue, Downtown Shreveport...FREE - 30.10.02 ---------
Monday, OCTOBER 28 6 Easy Pieces Born in Chicago in 1943, of a military family, Jon Jost grew up in Georgia, Kansas, Japan, Italy, Germany and Virginia. Expelled from college in 1963, he began making 16mm films. He is self-taught. He has made some 20 shorts and 13 feature-length films, all of which he has conceived, written, photographed, directed and edited. In 1965 Jost was imprisoned by US Federal authorities for 2 years and 3 months for refusal to cooperate with the Selective Service System. On release, he quickly became engaged in political activities, helping start the Chicago branch of what became Newsreel, the New Left film production and distribution group, as well as working for the draft resistance and the Chicago Mobilization. Jost made his first feature-length film in 1974, and has since devoted himself to the making of a wide-ranging series of films, largely focused on specifically American topics, in form ranging from essays (Speaking Directly, Stagefright, and Uncommon Senses), to essay-fictions (Angel City) to avant-garde and new narrative forms. His work has shown widely in museums, film archives and festivals since 1975. Jon Jost is the first recipient of the John Cassavetes Award for lifetime achievement granted by the Independent Features Project. -info courtesy of World Artist 7PM, Mickle Hall, Centenary College Campus...FREE - 29.9.02 ---------

Thursday, APRIL 11 AV/Geeks During the day a mild-mannered computer tech support technician, Skip Elsheimer, 35, spends most of time and money collecting, archiving and presenting old 16mm educational films. What started as a hobby almost ten years ago, the collection has grown to almost 12,000 films gathered from school auctions, thrift stores, closets and dumpsters. Skip recently purchased an old boarding house with eight bedrooms - five of which are filled with films. He presents monthly themed film shows in his home base of Raleigh, NC and Durham, NC - shows like "Film a Commie for Mommie" - a collection of films about communism and its threat to the American way of life; or "Anatomy of an Auto Accident" - educational films about car crashes. Recently, he's taken his shows on the road to Boston's Coolidge Cinema and New York's American Museum of the Moving Image, where he did an eight show retrospective. Films from his archive have been released on DVDs - "Social Engineering 101" and "Sex and Drugs" Two more DVDs are due in June - "On the Job" and "Driver's Ed". Thursday, FEBRUARY 28 a Peripheral Produce north american film tour: MATT MCCORMICK is a 29-year-old filmmaker who uses original and found footage to create short, poignant collages. His experimental documentary "The Subconscious Art of Graffiti Removal" is a keen observation of how the process of destroying one art unwittingly creates another, and was an official selection of the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. "The Vyrotonin Decision" is a found footage disaster spoof that was awarded the "Best Experimental Film" at both the New York and Chicago Underground Film Festivals. Other films of Matt's which have been receiving attention include "Sincerely Joe P Bear", a sad love-letter from a heartbroken Polar bear, which screened at the Rotterdam International Film Festival. His brand new abstract short "Going to the Ocean" just premiered at the New York Film Festival in October 2001. JOHNNE ESCHLEMAN is a mobile experiment in spontaneous cinema. Johnne projects hand-made films while performing a live soundtrack, creating an ever-changing and intimate viewing experience. He recently toured the US with his performance-installation piece, "The Traveling Cinema". He has presented his work at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; PS 1, New York; the Portland Institute of Contemporary Art; and many other venues around the country. Eschleman's "The Read Letters" is a movie in which two 16mm projectors roll simultaneously, projecting side-by-side images of bleached found footage and text which has been hand scratched directly into each frame. Johnne accompanies the film with a live soundtrack using electronic keyboards and a xylophone. Both artists are founding members of Peripheral Produce, a Portland based film collective that has gained international attention for its guerrilla style screening events and videotape distribution projects. Peripheral Produce distributes titles by Bryan Boyce, Bill Brown, Negativland, Miranda July, Craig Baldwin, Jim Trainor, Gerard Holthuis, Vanessa Renwick, The Distance Formula, Animal Charm, Sarah Marcus and Kate Hardy, and others. Friday, JANUARY 11 minicine host Third Mind Collective from Chapel Hill, NC, for an evening of music, performance, poetry, and film. William Burroughs first suggested the possibility of a Third Mind. Essentially, when two people collaborate on any given project, a Third Mind is formed out of the merged focus of the two minds. This is the underlying premise of Third Mind Collective. By enabling a mutually beneficial network of creative people, Third Mind Collective and minicine hope to create an event that promotes everyone involved. There is no membership. Only participants.
